Have you ever wished you were better at drawing?
A lot of people think that being able to draw is a skill you either have or you don’t. I hear people say all of the time that they can’t draw, that they’re full of creativity but when it comes to expressing that creativity with a pencil and paper things just don’t come out quite right.
I think that many of these people can draw, or at least they have the potential to, they just need a little bit of guidance.
You wouldn’t start decorating a house before the walls are built, right?
Yet as artists we often give in to the temptation to do just that. Focusing more on the details rather than the subject as a whole.
Gesture drawing will help you focus on the overall shapes and structure of your drawing, giving you a solid foundation to work from. Over time you will develop a confidence in drawing that will shine through in your line work, and with practice, drawing will become easy and second nature.
Gesture drawing…what is it?
Gesture drawing is a very quick form of sketching meant to capture the basic structure and essence of the subject by focusing on simple shapes and lines, rather than getting caught up in specific details. Drawing in this way can help add movement and energy to your artwork, which is difficult to achieve when working in a slow and more considered way.
This age-old drawing technique is often used in life drawing classes or observational drawing where the artist is sketching from life in action, but it can be used for so much more! I’m excited to share with you how I incorporate gesture drawing into my own art practice and walk you through the process of how I use this technique to draw things like animals, people, and flowers.
